What Is the CITB HS&E Test?
The CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test is the standard assessment that construction workers in the UK must pass to obtain a CSCS card. Administered by the Construction Industry Training Board on behalf of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, the test ensures that everyone working on construction sites has a solid understanding of workplace health and safety.
The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and you have 45 minutes to complete it. There are three types of CITB test: the Operative test (for site workers and labourers), the Specialist test (for specific trades), and the Manager and Professional test (for supervisors, managers, and qualified professionals). Each test costs £23.50 per attempt, so it pays to be well prepared before booking.
CITB Test Pass Marks
The Operative test requires a score of at least 80% — that means getting 40 or more out of 50 questions correct. The Manager and Professional test has a higher threshold of 90%, requiring 45 or more correct answers out of 50. With these demanding pass marks, thorough revision is essential.

How to Prepare for the CITB Test
Preparation is key to passing the CITB HS&E test. The official revision material from CITB is available as a book (GT100 for Operatives) or smartphone app (around £7.29).
