CSCS Card Types Explained — Which Card Do You Need in 2026?

Updated April 2026 · 7 min read · By Site Team App

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) uses a colour-coded card system to show what qualifications and competencies a construction worker holds. Most UK construction sites require workers to have a valid CSCS card before they're allowed on site. But with several different card types available, working out which one you need can be confusing. This guide breaks it down.

Why Do You Need a CSCS Card?

While there's no single law that says you must hold a CSCS card to work in construction, the reality is that the vast majority of UK construction sites — including all sites run by major contractors — require one. It's an industry-standard way of verifying that workers have the right level of health and safety training and relevant qualifications for their role.

Getting a CSCS card involves two steps: passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, and having the right qualifications for the card type you're applying for. Most cards are valid for five years.

The Card Types

Green Card — Labourer

The Green Labourer card is the most common starting point for construction workers. It's for people carrying out labouring duties on site who don't yet hold a construction-related NVQ or SVQ. You need to pass the CITB Operative test to get this card. It's valid for five years and can be upgraded to a Blue Skilled Worker card once you gain the appropriate trade qualification.

Blue Card — Skilled Worker

The Blue card is for workers who hold an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 or above in their trade — whether that's bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, or any other recognised construction skill. You need to pass the CITB Operative test and provide evidence of your qualification. This is the card most tradespeople will hold.

Gold Card — Advanced Craft / Supervisor

The Gold Advanced Craft card is for experienced workers holding an NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in a construction-related discipline. There's also a Gold Supervisor card for those with an NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision. Both require the CITB Operative test. The Supervisor card is popular with working foremen and charge hands who oversee teams on site.

Black Card — Manager

The Black Manager card is for construction professionals in management roles — site managers, project managers, contracts managers, and construction directors. You'll need an NVQ/SVQ Level 6 or 7 in a construction management discipline, plus you must pass the CITB Manager and Professional test (the harder one, with a 90% pass mark). This card carries significant weight in the industry.

White Card — Professionally Qualified Person

White cards are for professionals who hold chartered status or membership of a recognised professional body — architects, engineers, surveyors, and health and safety professionals. You need a relevant degree-level qualification and professional body membership, plus you must pass the CITB Manager and Professional test.

Red Cards — Trainee, Apprentice, and Provisional

Red cards come in several varieties. The Trainee card is for people registered on a construction-related NVQ/SVQ programme. The Apprentice card is for those on a recognised apprenticeship scheme. Both require the CITB Operative test and are time-limited — they're designed to be upgraded once you complete your qualification.

Which CITB Test Do You Need?

The general rule is straightforward: if you're applying for a Green, Blue, Gold, or Red card, you take the Operative test. If you're applying for a Black or White card, you take the Manager and Professional test. The Operative test has a pass mark of 80% (40 out of 50), while the Manager test requires 90% (45 out of 50).

If you're unsure which card you need, the CSCS Card Finder tool on the CSCS website lets you search by occupation to find the right card and test type.

How to Apply for a CSCS Card

Once you've passed the appropriate CITB HS&E test and have your qualifications ready, you can apply online through the CSCS website. Online applications are typically processed in 3–5 working days. You'll need your CITB test pass certificate, evidence of your qualification, and valid photo ID. There's an application fee on top of the test fee.
